What You Need to Know

These plans are more affordable because the plans are not compliant with all of the Affordable Care Act rules that have driven up the cost of plans on the Marketplace. You can still find great coverage and at a steep savings, but there are some important things to keep in mind. Here are a few:

  • Medical Underwriting and Pre-existing Conditions

  • Term Duration

Additionally, there are strategic ways that you “bundle” more than policy to maximize the money you are spending on premiums so that if you do have a need for medical care, you will not find yourself with a mountain of medical bills. The easiest way to do that is to select a higher deductible medical plan with a lower premium and add protection for accidental injury expenses, critical illness and hospitalizations with additional plans that have low premiums, Here’s an example:

What is Short Term Medical? Is it right for you?

“Short-Term” Medical Plans are not-so-short term anymore. In many states coverage terms are available for 1, 2 and 3 years. Enhanced short-term medical plans provide coverage for benefits like prescriptions, some preventive care, copays for urgent care and more!

That’s great protection for $328 per month and he does not have to reapply for coverage for 3 years!

Here’s another example of a 41 y/o male in Kansas who wanted higher Critical Illness protection so selected Accident ExpenseGuard, Hospital SafeGuard and Critical Illness separately:

For under $220 per month he has the Short-Term Medical Plan with up to $2 million in benefits that pays 100% of covered costs after the $10,000 deductible is met. To offset his exposure to the high deductible, he has an accident policy that will rei…

For under $220 per month he has the Short-Term Medical Plan with up to $2 million in benefits that pays 100% of covered costs after the $10,000 deductible is met. To offset his exposure to the high deductible, he has an accident policy that will reimburse anywhere from $400- $20,000 in costs associated with covered injuries and $50,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment. Additionally, a hospital plan that will pay him $1.000 per day, up to 31 days in a calendar year that he is hospitalized (admitted) and last but not least, a Critical Illness policy that will pay the lump sum benefit amount of $50,000 directly to him, to use as he wishes, if he is diagnosed with one of the eleven covered critical illness like cancer, heart attack, stroke, organ failure and more. That money can be used to pay his $10,000 deductbile and help replace lost income or other expenses .

One More Important Example!!

Another very strategic plan design is accomplished by enrolling in a high deductible Term Medical plan and a limited benefit medical policy like Health Protector Guard by UnitedHealthcare or Affordable Choice by Manhattan Life Insurance Company. The limited benefit medical plans provide set dollar amount benefits for each covered service, regardless of what the provider bills or what you owe after any other insurance pays. Benefits, for example, include $25 for generic/$40 for brand name medications, $2,000 per day (unlimited days) hospitalized, $100 for up to 10 doctor visits per year, $2,000 per day for up to 40 days of chemo or radiation and much more. Using this approach, one could likely offset nearly all medical expenses and if a major illness like cancer or a long hospitalization occurred, the limited medical plan could provide a significant amount of additional funds, beyond what would be owed in medical bills.
